BRL lowdown Round 5: No-nonsense unbeaten Dolphins eye off traditional rivals

Defending 2023 premiers Wynnum Manly Juniors have finally posted their first win of 2024 to take flight in their title defence - their second may not come straight away.

The Seagulls will be at home this week against traditional rivals Redcliffe at Kitchener Park 4.30pm.

The Dolphins have played no-nonsense football to remain undefeated with halves Thomas Casey and Latrell Siegwalt directing the big men up the middle of the park.

Fullback Michael McGrath continues to impress and he will need to do that again against a committed Seagulls 17.

Once again Wynnum will roll out a massive pack with mountain men Lachlan Lee, Simione Fatafehi and dynamic ball-runner Lolo Saitaua. Just to name a few to bring down the 'Phins outstanding start to 2024.

Valleys posted their first loss last week and will need to rebound against an undefeated Carina side at Emerson Park on 3pm. Valleys were pipped on the siren last week, so they will need to do a full 80 minutes against the visitors.

The Diehards, led by the menace of Joseph McGuire and the mobility of Jake Strasser and Reid Young, will need to be at their best if they are prevent back-to-back losses.

Carina have named the talented Michael Butson, Jezzy Ioane and hard man Lucas Halls in a squad that have quickly become season favourites.

Beenleigh will host Bulimba from 3pm at Hammel Park, where the Pride will need to be at their best against last year’s minor premiers.

Bailey Loughhead, Gareth Smith and Bradley Frith will look to inspire the rest of the Pride as they try to produce some consistent football at home.

The Bulldogs bounced back last week and their bench with Riley Leota, Moses Noovao-McGreal and Tom O’Keefe will add extra headaches to Beenleigh when they are called to enter the fray.

The Hounds have had a disastrous start to 2024, and they'll look to turn things around from 4.30pm at Bert St Clair Oval against the Magpies.

Normanby have the capabilities to score points with Jack Smith, Kingstimer Paraia and Kyle Fleetwood-Piper all capable of scoring tries from anywhere.

Souths have speed to burn out wide with Blessed Tumua, Chris Humphris and Travis Turnbull equally regular visitors to the try line.

Ladder leaders West Brisbane have chalked up 176 points and will look to add to that total from 4.30pm at Franklin Oval where they will clash with the Roosters.

Brighton are yet to post a win but they have the machine Dilbert Issac returning to add some mongrel up the middle. Dvonte Sa’u and Luke Sorensen will also add punch and they’ll need to if they are to bring down the Panthers.

The Panthers armour shows few chinks from 1-17. Corey Davis will join Zac McMinn and Samson Graham as they look to go 5 from 5. Graham will look for big minutes against his former club.

If the Roosters are to crow for the first time, they’ll need all their cockiness for the full 80.
